In the second quarter of 2015, Huawei sold 28.2 million smartphones, up 54.9% compared to the first quarter, showing much better sales performance than other international brands, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute).

"Huawei has succeeded in building its brand image at the upper-end of market sector with higher specifications than Apple and Samsung. Coupled with solid partnerships with global carriers around the world, Huawei has been put in a more advantageous position than other Chinese brands," says Edward Lin, senior industry analyst with MIC.

"It is likely that Huawei will see its full-year shipments break 100 million units in 2015."

Meanwhile, shipments of other brands LG, Xiaomi and ZTE continued to grow steadily. LG shipped 14.1 million smartphones, down 8.4% sequentially. Bolstered by the continued sales of G4 and new product rollouts, LG is able to sustain its foothold.

Laggards such as Sony and HTC are likely to be trapped in the vicious cycle with relatively small shipments and their sales performances are going to remain disappointing in the short run.

Shipment volume of the global smartphone industry is expected to hit around 353 million units in the third quarter of 2015, up 4.6% sequentially and 6.9% year-on-year.
