Wintek Announces Layoffs, Withdraws from Touch Business

TAIPEI, Taiwan-Unable to sustain continued loses, Taiwanese touch panel company, Wintek, this week dismissed large numbers of employees. In the future, Wintek will only have 300 employees in Taiwan, which is only 6% of its former labor force. In addition, Wintek will withdraw from touch panel manufacturing and switch to biotech food products and LED lighting.

From this Wednesday (December 17), Wintek will lay off a batch of 2,360 employees and by the end of the month with employee layoffs in Taiwan factories, a total of 4,300 workers will be terminated. In the future, approximately 300 employees will remain, which will be only 6% of the workforce previously employed during Wintek’s heyday.

Wintek Chairman and General Manager Hyley Huang confirmed that Wintek will streamline its workforce. Currently in China, the following three factories have completely stopped production and carried out large-scale layoffs: United Win Technology Limited, Dongguan Wanshida Yejing Xianshiqi Limited Company, and Dongguan Songshan Lake. In Taiwan, Wintek will also significantly cut its workforce, and in the future only the Tanzi factory will remain.

After restructuring due to claims of financial distress, Wintek in September commenced plans to trim down its operations and closed a TFT-LCD factory in Yangmei, Taoyuan followed by a Taichung factory.

It also began carrying out large-scale layoffs. Wintek also withdrew from touch panel manufacturing and has switched to new business ventures, such as biotech food products and LED lighting.
