The Influence of Merging of PMA and A4WP to Taiwanese Firms

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) have agreed to merge in hopes of standing up to the current market leader. Including MediaTek, MCU developer Holtek, Generalplus, Richtek, and ENE Technology are beneficial of it.

According to the industrial trends and policy research center, Industrial Economics and Knowledge (IEK), the market of global wireless charging will rise from US$5.4 billion in 2013 to US$9.3 billion in 2017. Meanwhile, due to iPhone 6 isn't supported wireless charging plus the standard hasn't been unified resulted in the market is still under the limited production.

After Qi, PMA is a distant second in wireless charging. A few phones have come with this standard built-in, like the AT&T variant of the LG G3. A4WP promotes the Rezence standard, which has yet to be commercialized, although it has some interesting features including the use of Bluetooth to control power levels, multi-device charging, and a peak output of 50 watts.

However, PMA and A4WP have agreed to merge in hopes of standing up to the current market leader has been viewed as a milestone of breaking through the unification of wireless charging standards and will result in a more advanced wireless charging standard.

MediaTek's wireless charging chipset MT3188 has been certified by Qi and PMA of WPC, while products of Holtek, Generalplus, Richtek, and ENE Technology have been certified by WPC's Qi.
