According to the MOU, Qualcomm will set up a new technology laboratory and technical team in Taiwan to assist Taiwan enterprises in 5G technology development, solutions research of new products and services, and product launch strategies. Taiwan’s ITRI, OEM and ODM manufacturers, telecom operators and network solution providers will jointly work with the new laboratory.

Shen Rongjin, deputy minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said that Taiwan and Qualcomm have long-term strategic cooperative relations. The cooperation of new 4G+/5G lab will not only enhance the R&D capability of Taiwan in 5G technology, but also accelerate the technological development of 5G, Internet of Things, and Smart City in Taiwan.

Paul E. Jacobs, executive chairman of Qualcomm's board of directors, said the lab will be ready in November this year and invest about US$ 1 million. He stressed that this is a long-term cooperation plan.

In the signing press conference, many Taiwanese tech companies had showed up for showing their willingness to cooperate, including Hon Hai, China Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, HTC and Asus.
