UMC’s 28nm Yield Rate to Substantial Grows

TAIPEI, Taiwan - According to Taiwan media reported that volume orders of UMC’s 28nm process has grew substantially, not only MediaTek may add orders in the second half, but Qualcomm and Broadcom may increase demand of 28nm product. The global 28nm foundry is dominated by TSMC, but UMC is rapidly catching up.

UMC said the yield rate of 28nm low-power poly sion process has been improved, while winning additional orders from MediaTek, which will be in volume production in June.
In addition, the yield rate of 28nm high-K metal gate (HKMG) process which for Netcom and high-end phones purpose also had very good improvement, have been certified by Qualcomm and Broadcom. UMC said that 28nm HKMG process to volume production in the second half of this year, but could not disclose the customer details.
UMC is one of two providers of Gate-Last technology, another is TSMC, its improvement of yield rate could effectively alleviate the problem of 28nm production capacity.
