Wolfson and MediaTek Collaborate to Bring Audio Solutions to LTE Reference Platforms

Published: May 02,2014

Wolfson Microelectronics plc announced a collaboration with MediaTek Inc. that will deliver Wolfson’s HD Audio solutions as a pre-integrated option on MediaTek’s mobile LTE reference platforms. This collaboration combines the latest technology of both companies in a single reference design, thereby bringing new audio use cases and performance levels to OEMs for smartphones and tablets.

As a first step in this collaboration, Wolfson’s WM8281 Audio Hub solution is now available alongside MediaTek’s latest mobile LTE SoC platforms. MediaTek’s high performance platforms utilise the company’s energy efficient multi-core application processors and comprehensive wireless network communications compatibility.

Wolfson’s WM8281 Audio Hub platform delivers outstanding audio to mobile devices and can run Wolfson’s Ez2 suite of software, customers’ own software or third party software. This enables OEMs to offer audio features to smartphones and tablets such as 24-bit 192 kHz high resolution Master Hi-Fi audio playback; exceptional voice call quality including Ambient Noise Cancellation; ultra-low power ‘always on’ voice control; hands-free speakerphone and video-calling quality.

Eddie Sinnott, VP Marketing & Strategy and Head of the Partner Programme ecosystem at Wolfson, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with MediaTek. Wolfson’s world-class audio solutions uniquely deliver the uncompromising functionality, performance and quality of audio that consumers demand on advanced mobile devices. Our relationship with MediaTek addresses these growing demands and delivers a feature-rich, easy-to-integrate and cost-effective solution for smartphone and tablet OEMs.”

Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the MediaTek Smartphone Business Unit said: “The Wolfson WM8281 solution pre-integrated into our high-end LTE reference designs, such as MT6595, will provide our customers with unparalleled audio and voice differentiation. By both companies jointly investing in reference designs, this creates a more efficient ecosystem for our OEMs in terms of speed and access to premium technologies.”
