Mobile Internet Access is Increasing Rapidly in Taiwan

The latest results of the Digital Opportunity Survey for Individuals and Households have been released. They show that Taiwan's Internet use rate is in line with developed countries; 80.7 percent of people aged over 12 have used a PC at least once; 78 percent have used the Internet, showing the mature and stable computer and Internet use situation.

The figure equal to the 78 percent that is the average Internet use rate in developed countries calculated by the ITU, and well over the global average of 40 percent.

This survey's results also showed a big increase in wireless and mobile Internet users, up from 76.6 percent in 2013 to 91.5 percent in 2014, a 14.9 percent increase. The percentage of netizens (internet users) over 12 years who own a smart phone (84.9 percent) and tablet PC (47.2 percent) also increased by 15.4 percent and 11.5 percent in 2013, respectively.

The motivation for using the Internet for new users (used for under three years) were in order: began using a smart phone (30.4 percent), obtain information (23.8 percent), keep up with the times/curiosity (15.1 percent), want to contact friends or relatives (13.6 percent), and want to play games (11.3 percent), showing that the convenience and accessibility of mobile devices has spurred new netizens to begin using the Internet.
