TAIPEI, Taiwan — Wu Jin-rong, General Manager of Explore Microelectronics, forecast that DDR4 is gradually replacing DDR3 to become the mainstream standard of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). He even stated that the shipment of DDR4 will surpass DDR3 by the third quarter of 2016.

“All of the semiconductor products share the same specification, that is, products work faster with smaller size, and with less power consumption as well as with lower cost. DRAM is with no exception.” said Wu Jin-rong.
“In a bid to unify the DRAM standard, Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) developed and legalized the industrial standard, which means all DRAM firms can follow the standard to manufacture DRAM.” added Wu Jin-rong, “Hence, Double Data Rate (DDR), DDR2, DDR3, have become the mainstream standard DRAM products in the past ten years.”
However, DDR4 debuted in 2008, JEDEC announced a detailed specifications of which in 2010. Wu Jin-rong said that comparing to its predecessors, DDR4 will spend around six years to penetrate the market and become the mainstream standard.
There are few reasons for DDR4 spent more time to replace DDR3: slow progress of the process technologies, DDR4 needs the 30nm or more advanced process technologies that consumes more time to reach. DRAM industry had bad businesses from 2008 to 2012 is another reason.
“The DRAM process technology has stepped into 20nm era in 2014, plus CPUs from Intel support DDR4 so that it will be a good timing for transferring into it in 2015.” remarked Wu Jin-rong.
