Taiwan to Launch a Mobile Phone Security Certification

TAIPEI, Taiwan- Taiwan government is planning to launch an new information security certification for mobile phone, to solve the information security concerns of smartphone. All mobile phones sale in Taiwanin, will need to obtain this certification.

A few days ago, two model of China Xiaomi’s smartphone were found by Taiwanese ISP that automatically sent user data back to Beijing server, causing consumer concerns.

Although Xiaomi immediately admitted negligence, and update the software to stop this function, but the Taiwan government have felt a serious threat.

The National Communications Commission(NCC) said the Executive Yuan tooke this security issues very seriously, have already held an inter-ministerial conference to discuss the information security policy of mobile phone. In the future, all mobile phones listed in Taiwan, should be sent to examine non-mandatory, to check its built-in functions and APPs.

After passing the examination, a certification label wil be given by NCC, and published on the website for consumers to query.

NCC will also draft a complete information security regulations and certification procedures of mobile phone by the end of next year. Recently, NCC will invite all mobile phone brands to have a meeting to announce this new approach.

NCC emphasized that there will be no privilege between all mobile phone brands, all mobile phone companies should conduct this certification spontaneously.

Jin-Xian Luo, Director of Resources and Technologies at NCC, said, because there is no information security certification of mobile phone in the world, therefore, Taiwan will be the forerunner. If any global information security certification be announced, Taiwan will follow it.
