NCC is About to Annouce the Information Security Investigation of 12 Handsets

TAIPEI, Taiwan — On August, it is said that the Chinese Android smartphone firm Xiaomi caught collecting users' data and directly sending it back to its Beijing server, especially posing a serious information security threat to Taiwanese users. The Executive Yuan pointed out NCC to do the investigation, along with another 11 mainstream handsets, and the result is about to be announced.

According to National Communications Commission (NCC), the investigation has been done, 12 mainstream handsets were doing the information security checked of its built-in software, NCC discovered that some of the handsets collected users' information automatically without users' permission and knowledgement, and found out that software designed to collect unnecessary information excessively.

NCC stated out that they scrutinized the Xiaomi handsets more closely, and the company has done some improvements in terms of information security. However, other branded handsets also do have some information security problems, most of which are collecting users' habits and website cookies.

In addition to the coming result of information security investigation of 12 handsets, NCC held a seminar regarding the Internet management in digital convergence era that discussed since the big data is going to benefit to businesses more directly, users' privacy and information protection have been challenged. NCC hopes to reach a consensus between industry, government, and educational circles.
