TAIPEI, Taiwan - Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is a technology that uses LED light beams to transmit data. In Taiwan, the Industrial Technology Research Industry (ITRI) is currently developing a type of LED optical communication module in LED lights which use Li-Fi, and through beams for illumination, 60 Mbps of transmission capacity can be provided for broadband services such as watching high resolution movies.

LED has diverse uses and can be used almost anywhere. In addition, LED does not cause electromagnetic interference and can be used in specialized environments, such as hospitals and airports, or for confidential communications in conference rooms. It can also be used in places with electro-magnetic compatibility, such as hospitals and airports.

ITRI Information and Communications Research Laboratories Head Que Zhi-Ke stated that visible optical communication technology in newly researched and developed LED enables LED lights to simultaneously have both the characteristics of providing energy-conserving lighting and smart communications. It has limitless potential for applications.

Que Zhi-Ke also said that LED indoor light fixtures only need to have equipment for detecting optical communication modules installed and they can connect to the Internet. More importantly, LED luminescent bands do not require expensive spectrum licensing, so they are cost effective.

ITRI Information and Communications Research Laboratories Vice Head, Zheng Zheng-Qing, stated that ITRI has invested in research and development of visible optical communication technology for approximately three years and product-related technology has already been transferred to Taiwanese CNC manufacturers.

In addition, the penetration of visible light in Shanghai is several times higher than for most RF bands and is suitable for use in underwater high speed wireless communication. When used with LED underwater flashlights, it enables scuba divers to converse and can be substituted for traditional sign language or writing boards.

Furthermore, in order to make applications for LED visible light communications more varied, ITRI will also miniaturize this type of technology and make it into wearable modules. In addition, it is also developing cellphone APPs for visible light communications, which will allow smart hand held devices to also be able to receive visible light communication signals.
