ITRI Debuts 3D Metal Printer to Boost the Jewelry Printing

TAINAN, Taiwan — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) debuted the first made-in-Taiwan 3D metal printer on May 21 at ITRI Southern Region Campus in a bid to boost the jewelry printing in Taiwan. Horng Ji-bin, Center Director at the Additive Manufacturing and Laser Application Center of ITRI Southern Region Campus, stated that jewelry printing can save up to 50 percent of the production time.

Horng Ji-bin analogized the content of 3D printing as the queen, whlie the technology as the king, “When king plus the queen, the product will be the prince or princess, ITRI Southern Region Campus aims at providing the total solution for all the jewelry companies and designers to do its low-volume production.”

Horng Ji-bin welcomed those who are interested in designing jewelry had better grab the chance to make the best use of this unmistakable trend by 3D metal printer. “Simplizing the manufacturing process and breaking all the design barrier are advantages out of jewelry printing.”

ITRI launched the 3D additive manufacturing metal printer AM100/AM250 that with the printing scope 100mm (L) x 100mm (W) x 100mm (H), where stainless-steel, titanium alloy, and cobalt-chromium alloy can be printed. However, the pricetag of the printer is less than NT$1 billion dollars, cheaper 50 percent than that of the international branded ones.

Regarding the technologies, ITRI has gotten Binder Jetting (BJ), Sheet Lamination, and Directted Energy Deposition (DED) in jewelry printing.

Last but not the least, ITRI also teamed up with Tongtai Machine & Tool Co., S-Tech Co., Chia Yi Steel Co. with the view to manufacture 3D printers and materials.
