TAIPEI, Taiwan — COMPUTEX TAIPEI has been considered and certified the world second largest, Asia’s largest computer exhibition. However, the atmosphere of 2015 COMPUTEX TAIPEI is not the same anymore with the inaugural CEA Asia debuted in Shanghai, China one week earlier than COMPUTEX TAIPEI. As a result, many foreign companies only sent their Vice President to COMPUTEX TAIPEI and stayed shorter time here in Taiwan.

Internet of Things (IoT) was the theme of 2015 COMPUTEX, while Internet of Vehicles (IoV) drew a lot more attentions at CES Asia. Major IoV product launches sparked industry interest, including: Audi’s R8 e-tron, Q7 etron, Baidu Car Life and MMI, Ford’s Sync 3, Mercedes-Benz’ F 015 Luxury in motion and Volkswagen’s Golf R Touch, Connected Golf and Intelligent Charge.

“We are still wait-and-see, if we do good in CES Asia, Shanghai, maybe we won’t come here next year.” said a top executive that declined to be named in 2015 COMPUTEX TAIPEI from a Chinese IC design company.

In fact, since mobile devices have become the main stream growth driver of the ICT industry, the computer-driven COMPUTEX TAIPEI has been gradually losing its leading status in these years. However, the reason that the organizor of COMPUTEX still boasts of the growing numbers of exhibitors is because of Chinese companies.

Times have changed, Chinese ICT companies have built a complete ecosystem in China, from upperstream materials supplier or assembly production to downstream retailers. As a result, Chinese companies can skip Taiwan to contact their potential buyers within China, at the CES Asia.

Meanwhile, the emerging red supply chain isn’t a new idea. As long as the date of COMPUTEX TAIPEI and CES Asia are quite closer to each other, the so-called coattail effect is inevitable. Especially for bilateral ICT companies, either participating COMPUTEX TAIPEI or CES Asia instead will be an issue soon.

Nevertheless, 2015 COMPUTEX TAIPEI clashed with CommunicAsia in Singapore that was another reason resulted in few visitors here in Taiwan.

Additionally, CES is the largest eletronics show in the world, CES Asia is their first exhibition in Asia. It was in Shanghai, and it will be in Shanghai in 2016, as well. COMPUTEX TAIPEI had better come up with new ideas to compete with CES Asia or CommunicAsia as soon as possible. Innovation is the key to ICT industry, it can surely be applied into expo.
