TAIPEI, Taiwan — Tsinghua Unigroup Chairperson Zhao Wei-guo has become the hottest topic in Taiwan, especially the company has expressed interest in merging its two chip units with MediaTek. However, Terry Gou, Founder and Chairperson of Foxconn on November 10 criticized Zhao is nothing but a speculator. On the other hand, he suggested that Taiwanese government should have lifted local semiconductor companies ban on investing in China.

To some degree, Zhao Wei-guo fever struck Taiwan. Zhao Wei-guo-related news stories were on front pages, he who was all the rage. But, Terry Gou stated that “ Zhao Wei-guo is nothing but a speculator.” For example, “You can’t ask Morris Chang to sell his TSMC. He has 60 years of experience in the industry, which can’t be bought with money.”

On the contrary, Terry Gou advised Taiwanese government should have lifted local semiconductor companies ban on investing in China in a bid to avoid missing the chance like that of local panel firms in the past.

“In fact, many Taiwanese companies are very international. Like Hon Hai has factories in 12 countries worldwide. Another example is, Hon Hai is the second-largest exporting company in Czech.”

On the whole, Terry Gou said that Hon Hai has 10 to 20 thousand employees in Mexico. “The experience of globalization, technological management, business philosophy and culture of Hon Hai, is not something that a speculator from a Chinese company can buy as easy as pie.”

In addition, Terry Gou considered the ban of local panel industry to go to China a wrong policy. “That’s why the panel industry in Taiwan is now reaping the consequences.” Therefore, “The semiconductor industry in Taiwan can’t follow the same disastrous road to ruin.”
