TSMC on last Saturday in Hsinchu, Taiwan held their yearly athletic games, and Morris Chang attended the opening ceremony of the event with his wife.

After the event, Morris Chang was interviewed by the media and stated that currently although a number of companies have entered the specialized IC foundry business, TSMC is the leading global IC foundry with thirty years of experience to date.

Regarding competition with Intel and Samsung, Morris Chang stated that Intel is not a specialized IC foundry and are only testing the waters. Furthermore, he believes that Intel will find the water to be very cool.

Concerning Samsung, Morris Chang stated that they are a complexly organized company with memory as their most important facet and IC foundry a lesser priority. Furthermore, TSMC’s 10nm manufacturing is still faster than Samsung’s.

Morris Chang emphasized that TSMC has never underestimated their competitors; however, when faced with competition, will is a very important issue and IC foundry is a vocation that TSMC is determined to defend.

He also referred to the Battle of Stalingrad to express TSMC’s resolve in the IC foundry market saying, “The Battle of Stalingrad was a matter of life and death for the Soviet Union; however, it was not a problem of life and death for Germany. Under these different conditions, Germany’s 300,000 troops were completely annihilated, and the IC foundry market is TSMC’s Battle of Stalingrad.
