TSMC Settles Its 5nm Production Base Down

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) yesterday passed an environmental assessment of TSMC's 5-nanometer production base in Tainan, Taiwan. TSMC said, in the best circumstance, the 5nm manufacturing base will start construction this year, and scheduled to enter mass production in the 2020.

The EPA said, the assessment focused on the impact on water usage after TSMC changing its manufacturing process. Li Yu-ming, an evaluation committee of EPA, said that based on TSMC’s report the power usage of the 5-nanometer process will be 10 percent of the current 25-nanometer process, And TSMC promised the waste water will be reduced.
TSMC said that the five-nanometer process is still in development, is a plan for the next two to three years, and the company is going to invest billions of dollars.
And because the changing of TSMC’s manufacturing process, The Tainan Science Park will increase of 50,000 tons of water consumption and 700,000 Kw electricity consumption per day.
