Hon Hai Teams Up with Intel to Establish 5G Smart Applications in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan - The Hon Hai Group is teaming up with Asia Pacific Telecom Co., Ltd. and Intel to jointly create 5G smart applications in the following four domains: Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality(VR) lenses, medical treatment, Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and smart retail. These applications will integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and facial recognition to launch new forms of facial recognition applications.

Hon Hai, Intel, and Asia Pacific Telecom yesterday (December 5) announced that within the coming year they will receive results of Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) research and development and integrate them with Asia Pacific Telecom's mobile networks with the aim of directing them toward future 5G smart applications.

President of Business Group at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd and Asia Pacific Telecom CEO Mr. Fang-Ming, Lu pointed out that a trial 5G has been brewing for a year has has already gone from the creation of an experimental field at the Neihu office and National Chiao Tung University and progressed to cross over into lifestyle applications.

He also stated that in addition to creating an MEC platform, they have also invested in Cloud RAN as well as small base station and remote radio head (RRH) technologies. As for the time schedule for the launch of commercial products, they will follow the standard progress of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

Intel Senior Director of Market Development in the Network Platforms Group, Lynn Comp, stated that MEC is an important cornerstone in completing the establishment of 5G technology from the terminal to the cloud.
