Broadcom Launches First HD Satellite Set-top Box SoC for China

Broadcom Corporation announced a new high definition (HD) set-top box (STB) system-on-chip (SoC) for China's free-to-air (FTA) satellite market. As the momentum to deploy HD programming in China increases, Broadcom's BCM7228 chip enables satellite TV operators to roll out more advanced services and additional HD satellite broadcast transmissions through the integration of Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS+) decompression.

Broadcom's BCM7228 SoC is compliant with the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) standards for compression. It also provides state-of-the-art Conditional Access (CA) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) security to protect the rights of content providers. Broadcom will demonstrate the BCM7228 HD STB SoC at CCBN in Beijing, March 26-28.

"Broadcom has developed customized set-top box technology for operators in China to upgrade their subscribers to high-definition satellite TV services at minimal cost," said Dan Marotta, Broadcom Executive Vice President & General Manager, Broadband & Connectivity Group.

"Our latest offering is a highly secure chip that supports the advancement of the Chinese satellite TV market from standard to high definition broadcasts, which is forecast to grow steadily over the next five years."
