MediaTek is All Set for the Octa-Core Processor

Published: Dec 25,2013

MediaTek has officially unveiled its lastest Systom on Chip (SoC) set, dubbed MT6592, which is a true octa-core solution for the mobile platform this year, however, it still keeps muscling in tablet stage and the newest chipset, entitled with MT8392 is at the soonest going to launch in the first quarter of 2014.

After taking wraps of the chipset, duo-core MT8312 and quad-core MT8382 for the tablet platform, MediaTek is no doubt a latecomer to the tablet applications processor market. However, it made strong progress in a relatively short time and ranked the number three revenue share spot in the second quarter of 2013 according to a market researcher.

MediaTek MT8392 couples octa-core ARM Cortex A7 application processor cores clocked between 728-1684 MHz and Mali 450-MP4 GPU clocked possibly ticking at 700 MHz. It remains unrecognized whether the chip has GSM voice communication support or not. The chip is expected to exercise the 28 nm HPM semiconductor technology.

Nevertheless, it is said that MediaTek will also conduct vigorous propaganda for MT6592 in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next year. On the other hand, the MT8392 can be seen as a tablet version of MT6592.

Though the demand of smartphone in China is weakened in Q4 2013, the chipset battle between 3G and 4G is still tight. MediaTek is by all means set all its octa-core chipsets lineup for smartphone and tablet, and ready for the orders from white-box mobile phones, tablet, and those branded ones.

Cher Wang, chairwoman of smartphone maker HTC Corp., said that HTC is opened for those good things, including using chipset from MediaTek based on an earlier report.

After all, China Mobile is targeting sales of 100 million fourth-generation (4G) mobile handsets in 2014, a huge market that MediaTek or any other competitor won't miss.
