TAIPEI, TAIWAN — What are the chances and challenges over 4G/LTE or even 5G generation? ITRI held 2014 Mobile Communications Taipei Summit, and 3rd Generration Partnership Project (3GPP) firstly come to Taiwan discussing IC designation, facility integration, and business service with Chunhua Telecom, MediaTek, and Arcadyan Tech. Co., etc.

Mona Mustapha, Chairperson of Service & Systems Aspects (SA) of 3GPP indicated that initial 3GPP efforts have focusd on the ability on differentiate machine-type devices, radio-level optimisations to enable implementation of low-cost LTE M2M devices, and moving towrads generic solutions due to divergence of M2M traffic patterns.
Mona poinited out that 4G users should be enjoyed the best network connectivity because of their handheld devices will be automatically switched to 4G wifi mode, anytime, anywhere, that is the main challenge for Taiwanese network providers.
MediaTek Inc. Section Manager Fu I-kang said that since the number of connections keep increasing, which suggested that 500 billion wireless connections from machines toward 2020, long battery life, good coverage, efficient transmission of small data are basically required for all the IC firms.
Fu saw new opportunity in LTE evolution, and new technology is required to resolve the challenges, referring to much higher capacity, much more connections, diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, and less power consumption and cost.
Backward compatibility, newwork assisted interference cancelation, and operation, administration, and maintenance (OAM) unified are chanllenges that small cell are facing, Fu pointed out at the summit that in terms of interference problem by denser cell deployments, powerful interference cancelation required by future devices.
Technically speaking, long battery life, good coverage, and efficient transmission of small data are three features that small cell possesses that mostly relies on Algorithm.
“More wireless and mobile broadband will be requested more in the future.” President of Arcadyan Tech. Lee HY added, referring to the wirless bandwidth is important that is coherent to what Mona Mustapha’s point of view that carrying various services to users.
The play-role of small cell are improving the LTE RF radio coverage in public areas, meeting massive mobile data traffic growth, increasing the system capacity, providing the data offload to reduce the mobile network loading.
International Data Corporation (IDC) predicted by 2020, when the ICT industry reaches $5 trillion at least 80 percent of the industry’s growth, and enterprises‘ highest-value leaverage of IT, will be driven by these third platform technologies as well as an explosion of new solutions built on the new platform, which means cloud computing and big data will be good business.
