MediaTek Launches 4K Smart TV Chip for Android System; Selected by Sony

TAIPEI, Taiwan- MediaTek at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the United States announced the launch of the world’s first 4K UHD Smart Television Chip – MT5595, which is equipped for the Android TV system. This chip has been selected by Sony for use in the first Android TV.

MediaTek’s system-on-chip (SoC) smart TV system solution has been integrated with Sony’s picture-quality algorithm to create the Sony Android TV, which allows global users to watch movies on Google Play, entertainment programs or movies streamed online as well as play Android games on the television screen.
In addition, users can use voice functions to search for content on all kinds of websites. Sony in cooperation with Google will launch the Android smart television using MediaTek’s smart television system SoC.
MediaTek is looked upon as the leader in global television chips, with a market share of over 60%. This means that, globally, three out of every five televisions use MediaTek television chips.
Smart televisions that were equipped with the Android platform in the past were mostly white box television manufacturers, whereas brand names, such as Samsung, Sony, and LG used their own platforms. This time, MediaTek is collaborating with Sony and Google to launch the first brand name Android smart television.
MediaTek General Manager Xie Qing-jiang stated that Android televisions can bring about a completely new experience for consumers. With Android televisions the public can watch movies on Google Play, entertainment programs, or streamed movies online. They can also play Android games on the television screen.
In addition, consumers can search for content on all kinds of websites using voice functions. It also supports 4K2K resolution, and has a completely simple control interface, which makes it easy for consumers to begin using it.
MediaTek Senior Vice President and Home Entertainment Products Division General Manager Chen Guan-zhou stated that after Android televisions are launched, the patterns of traditional use will be changed, and the experience of using maps or playing games on Android cellphones and tablets will be exactly the same on Android televisions. Therefore, personal cellphones or tablets can be completely integrated and synchronized with televisions to become a single platform.
