TAIPEI, Taiwan — MediaTek, a smartphone chips developer, announced that it has sold out 35 million units of smartphone chips, which increased by 50 percent year-on-year. In other words, every one out of three smartphones is powered by the company's chip.

The merger between MediaTek and MStar gave a positive influence that led to a better business performance for MediaTek in 2014. According to the company, it ranks world No. 3 in the fabless semiconductor provider regarding the revenue.
On the other hand, smartphone chips serve as the company's major sales source, accounting for 50 percent to 55 percent of its total sales, while tablet chips represent five percent to 10 percent of its revenue same as the wireless communication and function smartphone chips.
However, shares of MediaTek, one of the nation's leading integrated circuit designers, yesterday closed down by its daily limit to NT$454 after the company's first-quarter sales forecast was lower than expected, dealers said.
