Kevin Tu, industry analyst with MIC, said that Mobile DRAM is now the area of focus in the entire DRAM industry. Therefore, the global leading DRAMs are also increasing their mobile DRAM production capacity.
Thus far, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are the three major mobile DRAM manufacturers, with a combined share of around 97% to 98%. Two Taiwanese mobile DRAMs, Nanya Technology and Winbond, constitute 2% to 3% market share.
Samsung has expanded rapidly and has obtained the leading position in the global DRAM market by securing nearly 40% market share. Recently, as mobile devices proliferate, Samsung has stepped up efforts to produce mobile DRAM and gained fruitful results.
In 2014 alone, Samsung's market share reached around 46.1% and 45.4% in the first and second quarters of 2014, respectively. In the third quarter, Samsung's global share stood at 50.6%, followed by SK Hynix's 27.6%. Although ranked third in 2014, Micron's global share slipped to around 19% due to its overreliance on Apple.
Major sources of demand for mobile DRAM are coming from smartphones and tablets. Under the current market trends, the demand for smartphones remains strong, buoyed by the stronger market reception in emerging markets like China. On top of that, continued demand for tablets also leads to mobile DRAM growth. Thus, it is a sure thing that mobile DRAM will see robust growth in 2015.
