TAIPEI, Taiwan — MediaTek, a power-efficient, highly-integrated IoT (Internet of Things) technologies provider, on June 1, right before the COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2015 announced the launch of the industry-leading MT7687 - a low-power, WiFi System-on-Chip (SoC) that allows home appliances and smart devices to connect to and be controlled through a home network.

Enabling a diverse range of IoT applications, the MT7687 provides advanced security, integrated memory, and an enhanced user programmable microcontroller. The MT7687 will be available to customers and developers in Q3 2015.

“With this latest SoC, we focused our energy on the main concerns of the IoT developers - decreasing power consumption, increasing security, and expanding programmability,” said SR Tsai, General Manager of Connectivity Business Unit at MediaTek. “Our WiFi performance and power consumption benchmarks show that this chip will give developers greater design flexibility than anything currently on the market.”

The MT7687 provides lower power consumption to ensure maximum performance with a minimal impact on device power. The MT7687 has the ability to transmit at a maximum power output of 21dBm, a level that exceeds comparable SoCs in the market for enhanced WiFi coverage for smart homes.

In addition, SR Tsai emphasized that security is achieved through AES and 3DES/SHA2 protocols as security engines. Additional MT7687 advantages include: An ARM Cortex-M4F MCU, 1x1 802.11b/g/n WiFi subsystem designed for power efficiency and robust connectivity, 192Mhz/200Mhz for Cortex M4.

Nevertheless, the MT7687 boasts of versatile peripherals, including UART, I2C, SPI, I2S, PWM, IrDA, and auxiliary ADC support diverse applications, an embedded SRAM/ROM and a serial flash in package, a compact module for Smart Home appliances/devices, an integrated security engine that makes the appliances/devices more secure and a developer-friendly platform with Open SDK.
