TAIPEI, Taiwan — Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is the top-ranked, government-funded institute for Taiwanese ICT technologies, has no exception debuted its state-of-the-art products at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2015. The handheld 3D scanner and the wireless mobile 3D scanner (mScan) with the view to realize the smart living into a good business.

Jenny Lin, Manager at Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratories of ITRI, expressed that the handheld 3D scanner is a depth camera technology which employs the comparison between the capturing image of IR camera and the specific pattern of random speckle onto the target object.

“This is a light-weight handheld device, only 1kg in weight. The scanning frame rate is 10fps, and the accuracy of 3D modeling can be reached up to 0.1mm through the real time registration and fusion of 3D image processing.” added Jenny Lin.

On the other hand, it can acquire 3D camera data of the target based on its instant single-shot capturing and then superimpose the 3D data with volumetric registration method to reconstruct the completeness and precision of the 3D color model.

Furthermore, Jenny Lin stated that mScan is a wireless mobile 3D scanner designed for smart devices. “It integrates infrared depth and color image sensing into a single compact module. Once the user installs the app to their Android device or Windows computer, 3D scanning can be activated through wireless communication.”

“Additionally, the user can view the construction of a full color 3D model instantly during scanning, easily adjust the scanning angle and position to quickly produce better images.” said Jenny Lin.

Jenny Lin also introduced technical features of mScan such as compact 3D color scanner for Android smart devices and Windows computers, RGB+IR single sensor and camera design, wireless connection, to name a few.

Additionally, both 3D scanners from ITRI can be applied into personal 3D modeling and printing, AR gaming development, 3D preview, personal medical and healthcare, 3D image inspection, heritage preservation and digital archive.
