Foxconn, Softbank to Open Robot Joint Venture

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Foxconn Technology Group and Japan’s telecom services supplier Softbank Corp. are planning to set up a joint venture to produce humanoid robots, according to Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on front page on June 17. Meanwhile, the new company is scheduled to launch commercial production by the end of this year, with an annual capacity of 10,000 units.

Foxconn withheld comment on the joint venture.
However, this is not the first time that Foxconn teamed up with Softbank, the company also invested in Softback’s humanoid robot, Pepper.
Pepper, which stands about 120 cm tall and weighs 28 kg, uses sensors to monitor what is going on around it before making “independent decisions.”
Moreover, the robot can learn from its interactions with humans and that their experiences will be uploaded to an Internet cloud database to be shared with other Peppers. In other words, Peppers can evolve as a collective intelligence.
Besides humanoid robots, Foxconn has been striving to accelerate manufacturing industrial robots amid rising labor costs and workplace disputes. The company also produces various sensing units that can monitor temperature, pressure and power consumption.
