TAIPEI, Taiwan - Mobile devices are still the primary growth drivers for touch panels. According to a PIDA report, in 2014 the global shipments of Out-Cell touch panels was approximately 1.08 billion units. Of these shipments, shipments of global On-Cell touch panels were approximately 260 million units, and In-Cell touch panel shipments amounted to approximately 200 million units. The major applications were mobile/smart phones, tablets, and notebook computers.

Currently in the global touch panel industry, there are two major types of touch panels which are categorized according to differences in the touch panel structures. These two main types are Out-Cell and In-Cell panels. For Out-Cell touch panels, after the touch module is completed, it is then attached to the display panel module.
For In-Cell touch panels, on the other hand, the touch function is integrated into the display screen during manufacturing. The structures of the two types differ in terms of the touch panel module levels and locations, and can therefore, be separated into the two categories: On-Cell and In-Cell.
PIDA stated that currently most people own at least one smart device, and this is a growth driver for shipments of touch panels. Currently, Out-Cell touch panels are, as before, the mainstream technology; however, following new manufacturing technologies and product requirements, applications for In-Cell touch panel technology will continue to increase.
