Chou Chun-ming. President of Epistar, emphasized mergers and acquisitions now take place in the LED industry. “It is likely to have only 5 or 6 companies left in the industry.”

Finding ways to survive has become the top priority of LED industry with the reason that it has had the unrest inside and outside. For example, Chinese LED firms benefited from their government subsidies ans started the cut-throat price war, along with Philips lowered the price of its bulbs in the second quarter of this year. Both lead to real slump in the market.

However, it was widely circulated last week that the company would layoff a hundred of employees.

Chang Shih-hsien, Vice President of Epistar, said that the small-scale layoffs is in adaptation to market variations.

Around 65 of those employess are based at Epistar’s Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), and none of which are in high-ranked positions. The news was confirmed by the Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau, Ministry of Science and Technology, which has received the layoff plan from Epistar.

Furthermore, Epistar forecast the LED market will be very bullish despite laying off employees of the company.
