Workers of CPT Protest Company's Unpaid Leave and Change-of-Shift Policy

TAIPEI, Taiwan — 30 Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) employees protested outside the Ministry of Labor in Taipei on November 23 over the company’s plan to change shifts and start unpaid leave. However, CPT cited that the change-of-shift is the company’s internal and legal direct control of operations that only affect employees’ overtime pay.

More than 30 employees from CPT rallied outside the ministry to protest a proposal to send nearly 200 CPT employees to other branch factory on secondment from the Bade factory, and change shifts at the same time.

An CPT employee who requested anonymity said, “It’s not a secondment. It’s a reduction of our working hours and pay, an intention of pushing us to quit.”

In response to the protest, CPT indicated that the sell of G4 fab and the end production at a 4.5G production fab located in Longtan, Taiwan resulted in the change-of-shift and unpaid leave.

Moreover, the company said that the change-of-shift only affect employees’ overtime pay, the base salary remained unchanged. And CPT emphasized that these measures are meant to maximize management efficiency and strengthen competitiveness of the company.

Meanwhile, The company on November 5 announced that CPT's consoliated net sales for October 2015 approximated NT$4,140 million, up 4.5 percent MoM and down 16.7 percent YoY. The company's cumulative consolidated sales revenues from January to October in 2015 is NT$40,334 million, down 14.1 percent YoY.

October shipments of large-sized panels totaled 131 thousand, up 14.9 percent MoM and up 12.9 percent YoY. October shipment of S&M-sized panels totaled 32,944 thousand, up 4.1 percent MoM and down 24.2 percent YoY.
