Jared Liang demonstrates ITRI’s Wide Viewing AR Technology
HSINCHU, Taiwan — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan’s largest and one of the world’s leading high-tech applied research institutions, its Wide Viewing AR(Augmented Reality) Technology became the Gold Prize Winner of Service Innovation of 2015 ECI Awards of IECIA, which has been viewed as “Oscar of E-commerce”. It has been deployed in 420 sales points, used by 4K sales of Sinyi Realty Inc., and increased 28 percent vacant house sales rate.

“ITRI’s AR service solution is a wide viewing angle AR technology with 3D content cloud platform for mobile devices. Therefore, it’s better than what IKEA is using now and physical home staging will be replaced by digital home staging.” said Jared Liang, Manager at Community Commerce Service System Dept. of ITRI.
Jared Liang further introduced the value proposition of this solution. Firstly, it could preview home decoration and change styles in real time for customer. Secondly, it extends service coverage from Taipei City to whole Taiwan that reduced furniture transportation cost for home staging company. Moreover, it help increase selling rate to real estate agent.
In comparison with the Qualcomm AR Technology, it has limited viewing angle. Jared Liang cited, “The effective AR viewing angle is about 90 degrees, for furniture sales applications with single furniture view.”
“In contrast, ITRI’s effective AR viewing angle is about 150 degrees for real estate home staging applications that provides whole room view, including sets of furniture.” added Jared Liang.
In additon, the technology benchmark of Qualcomm and ITRI is quite different. Qualcomm’s AR technology has a single physical marker in key frame-based tracking and that is suitable for games, and less computing resources needed. However, it cannot work when the marker is outside the field of view, according to ITRI.
ITRI’s AR technology has either physical marker or virtual marker that enables continuously and smoothly tacking. Therefore, it is suitable for wide viewing angle applications like the digital home staging services.
Last but not least, ITRI’s Wide Viewing AR Technology received Innovative Product Award at the 2015 Information Technology Month here in Taiwan.
