ITRI and Japan’s LINTEC Codevelop Solution Coated Gas Barrier Technology

Published: Sep 14,2017

TAIPEI, Taiwan - ITRI and LINTEC have successfully developed the solution coated gas barrier technology that possesses outstanding gas barrier and optical properties. As opposed to the conventional PECVD process, this technology adopts a coating process that effectively reduces costs and time required in manufacturing and eases the mass production of flexible displays.

According to Dr. Janglin Chen, ITRI’s Vice President and General Director of Display Technology Center, as the industry of smartphones and tablet PCs becomes mature, the advent of the flexible display may prompt a new wave of technological revolution. A number of high-tech companies have recently started to roll out AMOLED products, heralding in the new era of lightweight, thin, bendable, and foldable electronics products. While the flexible display is the market trend, the plastic substrate’s inability to ward off moisture remains an issue. It is, therefore, crucial to improve the performance of gas barrier property to prevent moisture and oxygen from penetrating the flexible display.

Dr. Chen pointed out that the solution coated gas barrier technology was developed based on ITRI’s R&D capabilities in flexible displays and LINTEC’s solution-type moisture and gas barrier material. This technology is ideal for mass production and cost competitive due to low equipment cost and high production throughput. It also provides high levels of gas barrier performance and optical transparency, and excellent coverage over uneven substrate surface.

The technology can be applied to the production of flexible display devices and touch panels and can thereby facilitate the commercialization of flexible displays.

This technology is now available for application to areas including flexible displays, lighting, touch panels, and solar panels. On the 15th of September, ITRI will hold a seminar and introduce this technology to leading industry players through presentations and demonstrations.
