It is a tough task to be innovated on battery technologies for not only hard to have breakthrough on material options but on production and applications. However, PLG (ProLogium) had overcome above difficulties. The self R&D FLCB (FPC Lithium-Ceramic Battery, FLCB) broke through process barriers, extended battery applications to infinity and won COMPUTEX d&i award this year.

FLCB is the first battery using FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) process and package material. With the total printing and coating process, battery as thin and bendable as soft board is created and completely subverts those limitations on traditional lithium battery of exterior and process.
Thus, FLCB owns characteristics like paper, thin, bendable, customized multiple negative pins, and extend flexible board or flexible cable to PCB to replace normal cable or connector. At the same time, FLCB is the only lithium battery capable of roll-to-roll production process.

On chemical system, FLCM choose Lithium-Ceramic, the Solid-like electrolyte to prevent the risk of leaking from traditional battery design, thus, FLCB is essentially safer while carrying similar functions compare to traditional lithium battery. Even through bending, impact, pierce or burning damage (700~1,300°C), FLCB will not burn or explode, it is assumed to be the safest lithium battery in the world.
PLG marketing deputy manager Lisa Hsu mentions that PLG was established at 2006 but already shipping products for now with new factory built up in Zhongli for more output. For lithium battery industry, this is an incredibly achievement for normally it takes more than ten years for lithium battery to be commercialized but PLG only spends seven.
“We invested minimum expense and shortest time to accomplish the development and production on FLCB”, said Lisa Hsu.
Yet the rapid progress actually comes from the perseverance on product development of GM Yang Si-Zhan. Hsu mentions that Yang had spent two years in his father’s penthouse just to develop flexible, bendable, safe and durable lithium battery technology. Finally the FLCB produced by FPC process is successfully developed.
After that, Yang focuses on battery improvement and mass production while established PLG for that. With Yang’s research achievement, PLG technology development went smoothly. The scale expanded from 6 employees in the beginning to about 170 employees for now including one brand new factory in Zhongli to manage rapidly increased orders.

For end customers, flexible and bendable battery might not sound exciting enough; however, if the electric storage and life cycle are even better than traditional lithium battery, then it’s a total different story.
Hsu stressed that based on flexible circuit board, solid-like ceramic electrolyte and unique negative package technology, FLCB can perfectly achieve safe, flexible, bendable, high density and large size production distinguishing features.
Especially on density, FLCB storage limit reaches 780(wh/l) which is 1.5 times compare to current lithium battery, plus the larger size production advantages, the application range will be extremely wider than we thought.
Moreover, FLCB from PLG provides the best solution for wearing devices to not only fulfill demands of flexible and bendable but combine battery in the production process. Hsu mentioned that FLCB is high temperature and pressure resistant, thus can be combined on plastic injection process to fulfill customize demands. Currently, several foreign customers have applied FLCB on the next generation smart watches.
The major application for FLCB now stands for 3C components, RFID, smart card and wearing devices. In the next two years, it will involve mobile device and 3C products, for example, tablet PC and NB.
The road map for 2017~2018 then will then extend to automobile and home devices. Hence, instead of small products, PLG is shooting for large applications to make FLCB everywhere.
“Hopefully someday FLCB can replace traditional lithium battery completely”, said Hsu.
