In comparison with AMOLED technology PMOLED architecture is simpler, the manufacturing costs are lower, and there are no minimum order quantity(MoQ) limitations. As a result, it is extremely well suited in diverse small-quantity products. Although its response speeds and resolutions are lower than those of AMOLED, it also features light weights, high brightness, and wide viewing angles, making it the optimal solution for functional displays for industrial, medical, automotive, and consumer electronics products.

Humphrey Lin, Marketing Manager of WiseChip Semiconductor, pointed out that owing to outstanding display quality and ease of integration of systems and products, PMOLED display solutions are receiving more and more attention in the market for its light weights, high brightness, and wide viewing angles. This is especially true for industrial applications, medical products, and new wearable devices.


Durability and Stable Supplies Meet the Requirements of Industrial Use

WiseChip is a global leader in providing PMOLED display solutions with over ten years of manufacturing experience and dedication to the development, design, manufacture, and sales of OLED technology. Currently WiseChip has the second largest production capacity in the world.


Lin stated that because industrial product lifecycles are much longer, customers care strongly about the stability of components supplies. Furthermore, ease of design and maintenance are key points in their assessments of products. WiseChip PMOLED display solutions are in stable supply and are fully compatible with general STN display panel architecture; therefore, they have won the full favor of industrial and medical care clients.


He also emphasized that WiseChip provides products that are extremely diverse and come in a variety of standard sizes to meet the customized and specific display requirments of industrial clients, including monocrome and full color products and products with built-in characters for 18 languages. This enables manufacturers to rapidly chose suitable display solutions in accordance with their own needs.


“However, even more important, PMOLED has excellent display quality that is capable of providing high brightness and screens with wide viewing angles, “ said Marketing Manager Lin.


The New Generation of Flexible and Transparent Display Products

In addition to its acclaimed standard models of PMOLED display solutions, WiseChip has also successfully developed ultra-thin and bendable PMOLED display panels with flexing capabilities as well as transparent PMOLED displays with high transmittance.


Dr. Chienle Li, Director of R&D Engineerig DiV of WiseChip Semiconductor, stated that WiseChip flexible PMOLED display panels have a maximum curvature can pass the radius 40mm bending test over 1000 times and will improve the radius under 30 mm in couple months and the thickness thinner than 0.3 mm. Which display can be used for applications on extremely thin devices, especially wearable products.

Dr. Li pointed out that because flexible PMOLED display panels are ultra-thin, it does not occupy the circuit space of wearable products, and more space can be set aside to be used for batteries or other components. Consequently, it can increase the overall performance of wearable products.


As for transparent PMOLED display panels, WiseChip uses it for Head Up Display(HUD) in automobiles. Its characteristic high brightness and wide viewing angles have the capacity to significantly improve the visual performance of HUDs and give drivers clearer and safer automotive information displays.

In addition, HUD devices which utilize PMOLED technology are very compact and do not have the complex internal architecture of projection and reflection HUDs. As a result, PMOLED reduces the difficulty of developing automotive information systems and is extremely suitable for both pre-installation or post-installation.


Dr. Li emphasized that PMOLED panels are economical HUD solutions.


A Display Solution with Unlimited Potential Applications

In addition to being used for standard information display applications, PMOLED display panels actually still have enormous market potential, and WiseChip is continually exploring possible applications for PMOLED.


Because of its characteristic thinness and low power consumption during use, PMOLED can be used in small portable products. For instance, WiseChip has tried to integrate it with smart cards and credit cards to be used as a display for real-time personal financial information support. Because PMOLED is characteristically self-illuminating and has high brightness, it can be used for a variety of different occasions and lighting. There are also no shortcomings with reading from e-paper for backlighting or auxiliary lighting sources.

WiseChip is also showcasing a concept for a type of smart vacuum thermos with a monochrome OLED display, which can use PMOLED to display the temperature inside the thermos. Even the type of beverage can be displayed on the screen for use in conveniently managing the temperature and condition of the beverage in the thermos. This simple method can be used to bring about added value and use space for everyday appliances.


Dr. Li stated that PMOLED applications are still at a very early stage, and there are still many possibilities for development. In addition to carrying out their own product and technology R&D, WiseChip also present more application concepts and jointly develop new products with other partners.


OLED Lighting Technology is More Mature – Will Soon Enter Mass Production for Business Use

Besides having excellent performance in display applications, OLED is actually an excellent lighting solution. Moreover, with the technology continually maturing and the production costs constantly decreasing, OLED lighting will also soon enter the phase of mass production.


As a leader in OLED technology, WiseChip also has OLED lighting technology and has introduced concepts for products, and as long as consumer demand emerges it will be able to enter into mass production.

Nevertheless, initially WiseChip did not enter the regular lighting market and chose to develop lower color temperatures (below 2,000K) and hospitality and healthy applications. The lighting products that they are showcasing are three-piece style decorative lights which are positioned as type of candlelight.


Dr. Li said that high brightness and wide-range lighting is currently still in the world of traditional light bulbs and LED lighting, and that OLED will begin to develop from auxiliary lighting applications such as decorative lamps and lights. However, WiseChip have selected more specialized color temperature applications, which are products under 2,000K, as its initial development strategy.


“Our candlelight lighting products will give consumers a new kind of access and a healthy-feeling user experience,” said Dr. Li.


Continuing to Refine PMOLED Technologies and Applications

As a leader in OLED technology, WiseChip currently has the world's second largest PMOLED panel production capacity and is continually growing. Furthermore, in addition to continuing to refine their PMOLED display technology, the company is also ceaselessly developing a new generation of applications and products with OLED technology, such as lighting.


Dr. Li stated that currently consumers and customers are gradually experiencing PMOLED, the excellence of PMOLED display solutions, and the benefits that they bring, and they are more and more willing to adopt PMOLED display solutions. In addition, WiseChip will continue to provide more competitive PMOLED display products.


For standard products, WiseChip will continue to expand its applications markets and joint collaborations with clients as well as satisfy clients' specified product design requirements. For flexible and transparent display products, WiseChip will continue to improve product performance, including durability, reliability, and curvature, and they estimate that within two years their flexible products will be able to reach a radius less than 20mm ever better.


Currently WiseChip is at the Embedded World Conference 2017 in Nuremberg, Germany (Hall1/1-349, March 14-16) showcasing their newest products and technological applications.
