TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) yesterday showcased the world's only type of extended depth of field (EDoF) medical imaging lens module. It does not need to be focused and is able to display 360 degree panoramic images, allowing medical care personnel to carry out minimal invasive surgery with greater precision.

In the past endoscopic cameras used in minimally invasive surgery were limited by their insufficient depth range in imaging distance which created poor image quality. Constant focusing was required in order for clear images to be displayed, and it was difficult to get a complete glimpse of the organizational structure of the abdominal cavity.

ITRI extended the application using digital optical technology to research and develop the world's first “EdoF Endoscopy.” It does not require focusing and can reach angles of up to 100 degrees, which is higher than the conventional average size of 80 degrees.

The EdoF Endoscopy is equipped with a cell phone panorama function which can display 360 degree panoramic images. This will be helpful for medical care personnel the future when they carry out abdominal, gynecological, and urology microsurgery because it will enable physicians and medical laboratory technicians to work with greater precision.

Vice President and General Director of the ITRI Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratory Yio-Wha Shau stated that the biotechnology industry's output has continually grown in recent years. Because high-end medical materials are the largest sub-sectors of the mid-scale biotech medical industry, Taiwan has an international place from brand names to OEMs.
