AUO Lights Up Its Gen 6 LTPS LCD Fab in China

AUO (Kunshan) Gen 6 LTPS LCD Fab successfully lights up its first 5.5-inch Full HD display(source/AUO)

AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO") today held a lighting ceremony at its Gen 6 LTPS (Low Temperature Poly-silicon) LCD fab in Kunshan, China to debute the fab’s first 5.5-inch full HD LTPS LCD, marking an important milestone for AUO’s long-term deployment in China. AUO Kunshan fab is scheduled to start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.

AUO Kunshan fab will produce products such as high-end smartphone displays, in-cell touch panels and notebook PC displays. The size of the glass substrate at AUO Kunshan fab is 1500x1850 mm, with production capacity initially planned at 25,000 units per month.

“AUO Kunshan fab’s one-stop production strength is capable of offering timely and complete solutions to customers, assisting them to develop products in the fastest manner to keep in line with the rapidly changing market demand” said Paul SL Peng, AUO’s Chairman & Chief Executive Officer.

“AUO has long devoted itself to the development of LTPS technology and its production. We have matured experiences in mass production and possess numerous critical patented technologies, and are fully confident of achieving mass production smoothly and raising yield rates quickly at the Kunshan fab. The fab will effectively increase AUO’s supply and market share in terms of high-end capacity, boosting LTPS development in China.”

AUO Kunshan fab is the Company’s first front-end LCD fab in China. Its important strategic significance fully exhibits AUO’s ambition to further develop the Chinese market. AUO Kunshan fab has summoned over 400 technical talents from Taiwan and China. The team has demonstrated high execution capacity and efficiency since the project’s inception. It took just a little over four months from the first batch of production equipment being moved in to the first display being lighted.

Paul SL Peng stressed that AUO Kunshan fab will ride on the success and capitalize on its accumulated technology and manufacturing strengths in the hope of becoming the fastest LTPS fab to achieve equipment move in, light up, and mass production, setting a new industry record.
