Motor products are widely used in industrial and consumer products. In recent years, energy-saving become a mega trend to lead the global motor market growth. According to market research firm M & M's research report, Global energy-efficient motors market is expected to grow from $31.79 billion in 2013 to $91.46 billion in 2018, GAGR up to 19.67%.

UL Taiwan general manager Tang Jia-De said that about 70% of Taiwan's exports of machinery and equipment , is facing a huge energy efficiency opportunities, motor manufacturers should seek help from professional third-party to support testing and certification for their product, to understand the international regulations. That’s why UL established motor energy efficiency testing laboratories in Taiwan, to help the domestic industry to keep up with international requirements.

In the U.S. market, for example, the U.S. DoE mandated that all single-phase and three-phase motor with horsepower between 1 /4 to 3 hp should compliance with U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act since March 9, 2015. This is not only motor products, but also end product with motor installed .

Currently, in addition to the U.S., Canada, Europe , Mexico, China , Japan, Korea and some South American countries have begun to declare their energy regulations of motor. Taiwan's Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs has also started working with ITRI to develop motor-related energy efficiency class specification.
