Morris Chang, who doubles as Honorary CEO of the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry and is dubbed as the father of Taiwan's chip industry, in his keynote speech to a semiconductor industry executive forum held by the TSIA in Hsinchu.
“Google glasses, wearables, and the concept of internet of things consist of smart home, ” said Morris Chang regarding to what are the next big things, and big chances for semiconductor companies. “However, we semiconductor companies probably are not making most money out of it, but those who can integrate and manage the ecosystem of internet of things (IOT), like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Alibaba from China.”
Morris Chang further indicates that Qualcomm, MediaTek, and TSMC are bullish 20 percent in these years because the rising of smartphones and tablets, “each smartphone contributes 8 US dollar to TSMC,” Morris Chang explains his statement with clear figure to illustrate how smartphones and tablets are important to semiconductor firms.
The founding chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company expressed optimism today towards the future of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, while suggesting three next big things, which he thinks will have a great impact on semiconductor industry.
“Firstly, advanced assambly by means of distributing and manufacturing 16nm, 20mn, or even 10nm and 7nm respectively to assure advanced packages,” following up Morris Chang states that sensors will be widely used in the era of IOT, “now sensors only for smartphones' cameras, in terms of IOT, sensors will not only be used as our eyes, but also measuring temperature, motion, and blood pressure.”
Finally, Morris Chang also predicts that the ultra low power technology plays an important role in the future. “It will be lower 10 times of the smartphones that of right now. For example, intimate wearables on the body should be charged once a week.” Referrring to the low power consumption technology is a notable trend from now on.
