MediaTek forcasts to ship more than 30 million 4G LTE smartphone chips this year, compared with the 15 million units it had estimated earlier this year, President Hsieh Ching-jiang told an investors' conference.

The company also predicts to catch up with rival Qualcomm next year in developing advanced 4G LTE smartphone chips at lower costs, Hsieh said.

Smartphone chip shipments accounted for 55 to 60 percent of its second quarter sales, while feature phone chips made up 5 to 10 percent, MediaTek said.

According to an earlier report, for the time being, institutional investors are scrutinizing upcoming factors for the company, including the mass production schedule of its 4G-capable MT6595 and MT6752 SoCs, the impact of anticipated in-government handset subsidies from 3G to 4G smartphones.

The reason is because the anticipated price-cutting competition from Qualcomm as the US-based company responds to a monopoly crackdown enacted by regulators in China, coupled with misgivings over whether the company can sustain sales levels in the low season from the fourth quarter of this year to the first quarter of next year.
