China’s Tsinghua Unigroup to Acquire Taiwan S2-Tek?

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A wave of mergers and acquisitions is reshaping the semiconductor industry, it is widely circulated that Tsinghua Unigroup’s subsidiary, RDA Microelectronics, is interested in acquiring S2-Tek Inc. And it will be given the final verdict at the earliest in this quarter.

S2-Tek Inc. is a TV IC design company co-invested by Sunplus Technology Co., and Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. The company devotes efforts in cutting-edge SoC solutions to meet applications for Smart TV, HDTV, and Internet TV.
If the deal is down, it will be the first time for Tsinghua Unigroup to acquire Taiwan IC design firm. However, Sunplus Technology withheld comment on this case.
On the other hand, Sunplus Technology announced early of this year that it disposed its assets of set-top-box (STB) product center to Availink Inc. for NT$330 million. Afterwards, Sunplus will invest Availink about NT$295million to acquire 16.67 percent shareholding of Availink, meanwhile, Sunplus will close its STB product center and cut about 90 jobs.
