Taiwan’s IoT Patents Growing, Intel Tops All

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) yesterday announced the patent statistics of Q2 2015. The ranking of the number of residential patent application shows that Foxconn was the leading applicant by having 150 patent applications especially in IoT and robot field. Acer ranked second for 95 applications mainly focused on IoT as well.

TIPO said that the number of Invention Patent amounted to 10,554 in Q2 2015, with the growing rate of 0.88%, tuned up to be positive after negative growth for the 4th consecutive quarter.
However, due to the decreasing applications of Utility Patent and Design Patent, the total quantity was amounted to 18,176, decreased by 2.37% compared to last year.
Gao Zuo-Liang, Deputy director of Information Services of TIPO, explained, the growth of Invention Patent means that the business strategy of enterprises is changing from quantity to quality, that contributes to the positive growth of Invention Patent.
He pointed out that among the top ten resident applicants, Foxconn stand tight in the leading position with its 150 applications, which are mainly in the field of IoT and Robot.
As for residents, IoT must be the next emphasis for business, known from the patent’s name, acknowledged by Gao. Besides, TSMC ranked the 6th , who focused on the innovation of semiconductor material and process.
For non-residents, Intel maintained its position as the top one applicant followed by Applied Materials, Semiconductor Energy Laboratory and Tokyo Electron. Apple had climbed stantially to number 6, while Samsaung slip down to 24th. Most of cases are clarified under semiconductor field.
