UMC pointed out that semiconductors for use in automobiles are experiencing rapid growth, and it is mainly from its first line customers who have switched from consumer standards to automotive standards of Grade 1 and Grade 0. In addition, demand from IDM and automotive IC design companies has also increased dramatically.

UMC’s main automotive clients include Japanese companies, such as Shindengen Electric Manufacturing Co., TDK, New Radio Co., Ltd. Japan, and RICOH Electronic Devices Ltd. as well as other large European and American companies. Their applications include infotainment, heads-up display (HUD), and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as well as millimeter-wave radar, engine, and transmission systems and power management and navigation.

UMC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Po Wen Yen stated that the improved manufacturing process for automotive-use quality standards on the ISO TS-16949 has already created a full-range “UMC Auto” technology platform, and automotive chip-design companies will be able to make use of these benefits and further grasp business opportunities in the booming automotive semiconductor industry.
