HTC Denies Plans to Spin-Off VR into Independent Company

TAIPEI, Taiwan — HTC clarified the fact that the it’s not going to form a new company to develop its VR business, the company issued a statement denying any such plans, saying it would chart a direction for the development of its VR operations with the goal of creating the best value for its shareholders.

As a matter of fact, rumors of a planned VR spin-off on Monday boosted HTC’s stock 5.23 percent on the Taiwan Stock Exchange to NT$76.5 and it remained unchanged Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Cher Wang stated that Asus and HP will release VR ready PCs or notebooks in the near future. Furthermore, the price tag of the HTC Vive will probably be higher than that of Oculus Rift because of its high-end features and specs.

As pre-order sales open in this month, Facebook finally reveals the price for the Oculus Rift: $599.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times on Monday cited unnamed sources as saying that HTC Chairperson Cher Wang was planning to spin off the VR operations into an independent entity, which would be fully owned by her and HTC.

HTC unveiled its first VR headset, the HTC Vive at the Mobile World Congress show in March last year. The pre-order sales for the device would begin on Feb. 29, with the device scheduled to hit the market in April.

Last but not least, HTC Vive Pre, the second-generation of HTC Vive, will be showcased at the 2016 Taipei Game Show on January 29.
