TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) held 2013 fourth quarter earnings conference on Thursday, and this is also the first time that the chariman Morris Chang presented along with two newly appointed president and co-CEO Andy Liu and C.C. Wei. Their interaction drew a lot of attention to investors.
Successor cultivation has become an serious issue since the day that Morris Chang had resigned its CEO position of TSMC, and who appointed two president and co-CEO Andy Liu and C.C. Wei at the same time. However, remor has it that the ailing health of TSMC 82-year-old chiarman also isn't fresh to investors and media.
Morris Chang almost stood up all the way during the 90 minutes long earnings conference, and clearly expressed his point of view, including cleared name of the flagship 16nm FitFET, which Intel had attacked before. And whenever received overseas calls or questions on the floor he who would assign Andy Liu or C.C. Wei to answer, which proven that Morris Chang is still kicking off and still the key man behind TSMC.
One overseas call that concerned about Morris Chang's retirement living, The chairman answered that he hasn't changed much during the past two months, but spent more time on coaching the two president and co-CEO.
Interestingly, the chairman furthur explained that the title of whom, “chairman both in Taiwan's law and custom meant ultimate reponsibility so that I delegated to these two gentlement a title called president and co-CEO. President comes first, while CEO comes second that co-CEO is basically a western term. In the US, a CEO bears the final responsibility.”
Morris Chang wanted to make the two president and co-CEO to be actual chairman both in Taiwan's law and custom but bear the title that under CEO, which is the US sense.
Successor cultivation is not an easy job, especially for a huge business like TSMC, which has 40,000 employees in the world. As long as the two president and co-CEO existed one day, the chariman that behind the scene will always complete this three-man game.
