Hydis Licenses FFS Technology to China LCD Company BOE

TAIPEI, Taiwan-E Ink, an electronic paper supplier, announced on Tuesday that its South Korean subsidiary Hydis signed a patent cross-licensing agreement with BOE Technology, a China display company. This is the first licensing agreement with China panel makers after LG Display (LGD), Sharp, AUO, CPT and Innolux.

The announcement said, Hydis and BOE have signed a patent cross-licensing agreement, the scope of licensed-patents mainly in TFT-LCD related technology, China panel makers BOE will acquire Fringe Field Switching(FFS) Technology from Hydis, and this agreement will be implemented from April 1 this year.

Announcement stated that the agreement between two sides will have a positive outcome in financial and business. As for specific items, due to the confidentiality terms of the agreement are not be made public.

For the hot selling tablet PC, wide viewing angle technology has become an essential specification. Whether it is Hitachi's IPS, or Hydis’s FFS, are all crucial technology to panel makers.

However, the panel maker disclosed that only South Korea LG’s IPS technology has a mature production capacity, the others did not have stable yield rate; FFS is a recent popular choice for panel maker.
