TSMC’s Expansion Project in Taichung is Uncertainty

TAIPEI, Taiwan- The expansion plan of Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) was overruled by Taiwan EPA Environmental Assessment Committee on Wednesday, may cause the NT$ 50 billion fab expansion plan of TSMC changed. The expansion plan of CTSP encountered strong opposition from environmental groups in Environmental Assessment Committee, and failed to pass the assessment, have been identified can not be started at the end of this year.
CTSP Bureau Director Wang Yong-Zhuang pointed out that the EPA asked CTSP to provide the further details of emissions, health risk assessments and other information. He hoped the whole case can be passed in mid-January next year.
He stressed that the land acquisition of this case has been settled, once the has approved by the EPA, will soon be able to break ground.
TSMC had scheduled to start the expansion plan in CTSP early next year, but due to the uncertainty of the environmental assessment, TSMC may change its plan. Zhuang Zai-shou, new plant project director of TSMC, confirmed that TSMC have backup plan, but not been declared currently.
